TIGER IS BACK !!!!

Tiger who was out of action since last June, proved that he is well and truly back when he shot a brilliant 67 to pip the brave Sean OHair by one shot in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
5 shots behind overnight,Tiger made up ground quickly. He was only 2 behind heading into the back nine.
He drew level after 15,thanks to some brilliant putting, but had to wait until the final hole before overtaking Sean for the first time.
After scores of 68,69,71 and 67 Tiger won his 66th tour victory and Palmers event for the 6th time.
Would you bet against him for the Masters ?
Padraig Harrington had a good tournament. He finished 11th with scores of 70,68,73,70.
Greame McDowell finished 40th with rounds of 71,69,73,74.

Irish golfers have a bad time in Spain !

All 6 irish golfers missed the cut at the Open de Andalucia in Seville this week.
The event was won by Danish golfer Soren Kjeldsen who added the title to the Volvo Masters he won in Spain at the end of last season. It took Soren 309 events before he won his first title and now 9 tournaments later he has added his second.

Damien McGrane took an 8 at his finishing hole in round one for a 74.He put up a good fight in round two but missed the cut by one shot after hitting a 70.

Superstar,Rory McIlroy flies out to the US tomorrow on a private jet along with his family, friends and coach Michael Bannon to start his build up to the Master's.
They will spend the weekend in Augusta, before flying to Houston for next week's tournament and then back to Augusta for the showdown the following week.

It will be Rory's first Major as a Professional and it is predicted that Augusta will suit his game. Might be worth an each way bet.
Tiger is the favorite to win his 15th Major and move one closer to Jack Nicklaus's record of 18.

20 year old Goya wins in Madeira !

With 3 Irishmen in the top 5 at the half way stage of the Madiera Open, they had to give way to a couple of YOUNG pretenders over the weekend.
20 year old Estanisiao Goya from Argentina, playing in only his 6th European event walked away with 166,660 euros and a 2 year exemption on the European tour when he held on to win by 1 shot from Scotland's Callum Macauley.Callum came through the qualifing school, was on 6 over par after 2 rounds and just made the cut.A 67 put him in line for a good cheque on Sunday. He was 1 over par after 9 holes, before going on a run of birdies. In fact he birdied every hole on the back 9,except for the 12th.
28 shots was all it took him for the back 9,and only 1 short of victory.
The top Irishman was Damien McGrane in joint 3rd with Hollands Will Blessing on 4 under par.
Half way leader Michael Hoey finished on 2 under par, while Michael McGeady had a horrible weekend going from 6under after 2 rounds to finish on 7 over par and down in 23rd place.

Ulsterman Hoey leads Madeira Open !

30 year old Belfast man Michael Hoey leads the Madeira Open after a brilliant 66 left him on 7 under par at the halfway stage.Hoey qualified at tour school at his 6th attempt and has already finished second to Retief Goosen in Africa this year.
He is looking to go 1 better this week,as he likes the Seve designed course.
Without 19 year old Rory McIlroy playing, it is up to the older Northern Ireland golfers to keep the flag flying.
Another 30 year old Ulsterman Michael McGeedy, playing on the European tour in his first year, should have been leading as he was 8 under par playing his last hole.
He found a bunker, played out to 20feet and 3 putted for a double bogey to sit in joint 2nd on 6 under par.
Veteran Irishman Damien McGrane is joint 5th after a level par 72 to go with his 66 on day one.
Johnny Caldwell +8 and Simon Thornton +18 are on their their way home.

McGrane keeps Irish flag flying in Madeira Open !

After all the drama this last 3 weeks watching Rory McIlroy competing in the US for the first time,we felt there wouldn't be much to report this week.We were wrong.
Last years winner of the China open,Damien McGrane proudly sits on top of the Leaderboard alongside Joakim Haeggman on 5 under par 66 in the Madeira Island Open.
Damien played in the worst of the weather and starting at the 10th he rolled in 5 birdies to turn in 31 shots. He bogied the 2nd,birdied the 3rd and having dropped another shot at the 5th,looked like he would finish behind Haeggman, until chipping in from a very dificult bunker shot for birdie at the last.
Ulstermen Michael Hoey and Michael McGeady are in joint 6th on 69.Johhny Caldwell who was Rory McIlroy's partner in the Walker cup had a bad day with 76 and Royal County Down's Simon Thornton had a miserable start, being 6 over par after 5 holes.
He never recovered and took a triple bogey 8 at the last for an 83.

Tiger tips McIlroy for World No1....

Tiger Woods tipped 19 year old Rory McIlroy to become World No1,even though he hasn't played with him yet! I have watched him on TV and he seems to have an all round game, and i am led to believe that he work's hard on the practice area, which is always a good sign that he is hungry.
Phil Mickleson jumped back to World No2 behind Tiger with a 1 shot victory in the WGC CA Championship at Doral,Miami over Nick Watney in a very tense shoot out between both players.Mickleson finished 19 under par to claim his first World Championship victory.
McIlroy could only manage 2 birdies all day, even though he gave himself lots of chances.A double bogey at the short 4th,left him out of the title race.A bogey at the last after finding water, left him one over par 73.It was the first time in 3 tournaments in the USA that he was over par.
His 9under par total dropped him down to 17th in the World rankings. He finished in joint 20th position along with fellow Irish man Padraig Harrington.
Rory can now enjoy a couple of weeks back home in Holywood near Belfast hanging out with his mates and no doubt a few sessions with his coach Michael Bannon, before they both head to Augusta for the first Major of the year.....

McIlroy slips for the 3rd day in a row !

Sometimes Rory McIlroy lets the world of golf know he is only 19 and a little inexperienced. Most of the time he play's like a veteran who has been on tour for a life time.
For the 3rd day in a row he let shots slip away coming near the end of his round,in the WGC CA World Championship at Doral,Miami.
After 13 holes he had got to 13 under par and within 1 shot of the leaders.3 bogies in 4 holes dropped him back to 10 under par and a share of 10th spot.
While Rory was dropping shots the leaders Phil Mickleson and Nick Watney were piicking up birdies to open up a 4 shot lead on 16 under par.
Tiger Woods was a bit happier, after a 4 under par 68.Padraig Harrington worked hard for a 71 and is joint 18th.
Darren Clarke shot a 71 to sit on level par,and Greame McDowell had a fine 70 to recover from +3 back to +1.

Saturday 14 March 2009

Rory moves into 3rd at Doral !

Rory McIlroy continues to take the golfing world by surprise, when he fired a brilliant 66 to go with his opening 68 to join the veteran Kenny Perry in joint 3rd place half way through the WGC CA World Championship in Doral,Miami.
Phil Mickelson sits on top on 13 under par.Phil has chipped in 4 times in two rounds and only required 42 putts.
McIlroy started on the 10th and quickly made an impression with birdies at the 10th,12th,16th and 18th.A birdie at the 4th got him to 9 under par. For the second day in a row he made bogies at two holes in a row to slip into the pack on 7under.
Then he decided to show his quality.A 260 yard shot to 4 feet at the 8th set up an eagle, birdie finish.
Butch Harmon was full of praise for Rory,as he described his game as better than Tiger at the same age.
Padraig Harrington is still in the hunt on 7 under par,but Darren Clarke +1 and Greame McDowell +3 are well down the field.

Phil Mickelson 131 -13
Nick Watney 133 -11
Rory McIlroy 134 -10
Kenny Perry 134 -10.

McIlroy starts well at Doral.......

Teenage sensation,Rory McIlroy got off to a good start in the WGC Championship played over the"Blue Monster" course at Doral,Miami.
An eagle 3 at the 1st hole was followed up with birdies at the 5th&7th holes.A dropped shot at the 6th left him 3 under par to the turn.
With his 300+yards off the tee,Rory went to 5 under par with birdies at the 10th&12th,both par 5s.
He got a set back by missing 2 small putts for par on the 13th &14th.A brilliant long iron shot got him back to 4 under at the 15th.
Rory's 68 left him 3 shots behind a group of 4 players including Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen.
Padraig Harrington shows signs of a come back when he recorded 6 birdies and 14 pars for a superb 66.
Tiger Woods played well but putted badly for a 1 under par 71.
With the top 80 players in the world,it is no surprise that 53 of them finished under par.

Rory's poor finish at Honda Classic !

Rory McIlroy had a poor finish to the Honda Classic in Florida when he bogied the last two holes to finish in a tie for 13th place on 2 under par.
He had earlier trilled the large crowd's with a round that included 6 birdie's. Unfortunately he also had 5 bogies and only lost out on a top 10 finish by one shot.
It was still a great performance in only his second outing in America.
The winner was South Korean's YE Yang who finished on 9 under par and a one shot victory over John Rollins.
Yang jumped from 460th in the World to 146th and a two year exemption on the PGA Tour.

Sunday 8 March 2009

McIlroy slips 6 behind in Honda Classic.

Rory McIlroy had a run of 4 bogies in 6 holes as he went from 4 under par back to level par during the 3rd round of the Honda Classic yesterday. He did however recover to make a birdie that left him on 1 under par and in a tie for 19th,along with fellow countryman Darren Clarke who returned a super two under par 68.
Rory is attracting large gallery's and it is easy to see why.At 19 year's of age,he is rated first in Driving distance at an average of 309.2yard's.
South Korea could see their first ever winner on the PGA Tour as YE Yang held on to a 1 shot lead after a level par 70 and Charlie Wi is only 2 shot's behind him.

Honda Classic Leaderboard.

Tiger and McIlroy meet at the Blue Monster.

Tiger Woods has confirmd that he will play in next week's WGC-CA Championship over the famous Blue Monster course at Doral,Florida.
There will be the top 77 player's in the field, and N.Ireland's Rory McIlroy will be one of them.
It would be nice if Tiger and Rory were drawn out together in round one,and even better if they were in the last group in the final round.
Tiger made his comeback two week's ago in the WGC Matchplay and even though he lost in the second round to Tim Clarke he played some great golf, considering he hadn't played since winning the US Open in June of last year at Torrie Pines.

McIlroy still in the hunt at Honda Classic.

19year old Rory McIlroy fired a second round 68 to sit 5 shot's behind surprise leader,Y E Yang from South Korea, after the second round of the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
Once again Rory showed how cool he is when the going get's tough.Starting at the 10th he dropped shot's at the 12th and 15th holes to sit on the cut line at 2 over par.
A birdie at the 18th set him up for the front 9 and he quickly made birdie's at the 1st,3rd,and 4th holes to put himself back in contention for the weekend with a 68 to go with his 70 on Thursday.
Darren Clarke looked to be joining him in joint 13th until he took a triple bogey 6 at the dangerous 17th hole.Clarke need's to win this week if he has any chance of making the Master's.

McIlroy's poor finish at Honda Classic !

Rory McIlroy playing in only his second tournament in the States, took a triple bogey 6 at the difficult par 3,17th hole to finish on level par 70 and only 4 shot's behind the leader Robert Allenby who had a brilliant 66 in round one.
Rory's famous quote "I just go out and play golf, and everything else takes care of itself"was working great until the 17th. He had made birdie's at the 1st,3rd,10th,and 14th with dropped shot's at the 6th and 9th to leave him on 2 under par, before disaster struck with an ugly 6 at the par 3,17th to move over par for the round.
Once again he showed his class to birdie the last to match the par of 70.
The leader Allenby has joined Rory's ever growing list of fans.He said" Rory is definitly one of the superstar's of the future"
We will keep you informed of Rory's progress as he chases the $1,008,000 first prize over the weekend.

OGILIVY v CASEY 36HOLE FINAL

There was some fantastic golf played during the quarter final's and semi final's of the WGC Accenture matchplay in Arizona.
Geoff Ogilivy was 7 under par when he saw off N.Ireland's 19 year old Rory mcIlroy on the 17th green, and when the semi final was level after 12 holes,he went birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie to see off Stuart Cink to reach the final for the 3rd time in 4 year's.Geoff was champion in 2006,and was in the final in 2007.

The other semi final was fought out between two Englishmen.Former World matchplay champion Paul Casey had an easy 4/3 win over American Sean o'Hair, and Ross Fisher had a tidy 2/1 win over the steady Justin Leonard. It make sure an English man would reach the Final for the first time.
It was always going to be a tight game, and so it proved with Casey keeping in nose in front winning on the 17th.
Geoff Ogilivy said he was delighted to have to come out on top of McIlroy. He agreed with comment's from Mark o Meara and Ernie Els that Rory would be hard to stop from reaching the top of the World rankings.
