(26)EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN RYDER CUP TEAM.

After the Johnny Walker Championship at Gleneagles,Colin Montgomery had the job of announcing the European Ryder Cup team to face the Americans at Celtic Manor Golf Resort in Wales from October 1-3.

The top 4 from the World rankings were Lee Westwood,Rory McIlroy,Martin Kaymer and Graeme Mc Dowell.

The top 5 from the European Tour were Ian Poulter,Ross Fisher,Francesco Molinari,Miguel Angel Jimenez and Peter Hanson.

The 3 wild cards went to Padraig Harrington,Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari.

There was disappointment for World No9 Paul Casey and double PGA Tour winner this year,Justin Rose.

Ireland will have a keen interest in the Ryder Cup this time around as they have Rory McIlroy,Graeme Mc Dowell and Padraig Harrington all in action on the golf course while Darren Clarke and Paul Mc Ginley will play their part behind the scene as vice-captains along with Sergio Garcia and Thomas Bjorn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Corey Pavin,Captain of the US team had the hard task of selecting 4 wild cards for his Ryder Cup team after the Duetsche Bank Championship, which was won by Charlie Hoffman with a fantastic score of 22 under par.

It wasn't enough to earn Hoffman a pick nor was there room for Anthony Kim who was 9th on the Ryder Cup order of merit.

Pavin selected the experienced Tiger Woods,Stewart Cink,Zach Johnston and rookie Rickie Fowler. The 8 automatic players from the order of merit are Phil Mickleson,Hunter Mahan,Bubba Watson,Jim Furyk,Steve Stricker,Dustin Johnston,Jeff Overton and Matt Kucher.

The vice captain's are Tom Lehman,Davis Love 111,Paul Goydos and Jeff Sluman.

(25)EDOARDO MOLINARI BRILLIANT FINISH AT GLENEAGLES.

29 year old Edoardo Molinari birdied the last three holes to win the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. Molinari was two behind Australian Brett Rumford with three holes to play.

With the pressure on, not only to win the Johnny Walker Championship but also needing a win to convince Monty he was good enough for a Ryder Cup wild card, Edoardo then two-putted the long 16th for a birdie 4, sank a monster 30 foot putt at the 194 yard 17th and then hit a chip to within 18 inches of the final hole.

It was a magnificent finish for Molinari who finished on 10 under par to beat Rumford by one shot. Edoardo was playing Challenge Tour golf last year and now with his 2nd victory in Scotland this year he will make his debut on the Ryder Cup side in Wales alongside his younger brother Francesco.

Damien McGrane was up with the leaders after 3 rounds. He was 7 under par starting the final round but dropped down into joint 7th with a disappointing 74. His 5 under par total gave him a nice cheque of €43,774.

Simon Thornton was also 7 under par heading into the last round. Unfortunately he took 78 shots in the last round to win €15,100 and finish down in 26th place.

Paul Mc Ginley opened brightly with a 68 and 70 but fell away after weekend scores of 74 and 76 to win €11,707 for a share of 35th place.

Lawrie was joined an hour later by rookie Gary Boyd who birdied the 18th for a 68.

Peter Hanson started the last round on -12. He got a disastrous start with 3 dropped shots in the first 4 holes to lose the lead to Boyd. He rallied well by covering the next 14 holes in 1 under par to join Lawrie and Boyd in a sudden death play off.

The trio all parred the first play off hole but it was Hanson who holed an 18 foot putt for a birdie on the second play off hole to claim the €333,330 cheque.

Peter Lawrie and Gary Boyd took home €173,710 each.

(11) THE RISE OF A US CHAMPION FROM GERMANY.

Only four years ago USPGA Champion, Martin Kaymer was playing on mini tours between Germany and Spain. He joined the EPD Tour in Germany and the Hi5 Pro Tour based in Spain to learn his trade.

At first there was little to show that Kaymer was going to be a champion. "He was a big hitter but his short game was below average. The one thing in his favour was he wasn't afraid to work hard and he wasn't afraid to learn," said Nigel German from the Hi5 Pro Tour.

Towards the middle of the 2006 season the hard work started to pay off. He shot a 59 in one of the EPD events which led to an invite into a Challenge Tour event in his homeland of Germany. Kaymer made the sponsors proud when he lifted the trophy. That gave him full playing rights on the Challenge Tour and over the remaining seven tournaments he won again and was in the top 10 nearly every week.

At the end of the season he had moved into 4th on the Order of Merit table which earned him a place on the main European Tour for 2007.

Kaymer continued his amazing rise through 2007 by recording five top ten finishes in his first full year on the European Tour, becoming the first German to be named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year.

Kaymer's first victory came in his first outing of 2008 in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. It was followed by a win in Germany at the BMW International Open that moved him into the World's top 50.

Kaymer continued in 2009 with sensational wins at the Open de France and The Scottish Open, to rise to 11th in the world. Now some four years later, Kaymer is a Major Champion, leads the Race To Dubai with €2,254,400 and is number 5 in the World and rising.

(10)LISA MAGUIRE REACHES SEMI-FINAL OF THE BRITISH GIRLS.

The British Girls' Amateur Championship was played at Royal Belfast. The top 64 scores made it through to matchplay after 36 holes of stroke play.

Winner of the English Women's Open Stroke play title the previous week, South Korean Julie Yang took the leading qualifing prize with rounds of 69/74 ( 141 ). French ladies' Champion, 18 year old Alexandra Bonetti was 2nd best with rounds of 68/74 ( 142 ). Home player Leona Maguire from Slieve Russell was 3rd best on 145 after rounds of 72/73 ( 145 ). Lisa Maguire was the only other Irish qualifier when she made it in 54th place after scores of 79/76 ( 155 ).

In the first two rounds Leona Maguire beat Emily Penttila from Finland and 15 year old Lauren Taylor from Woburn on the final green, while Lisa beat Spain's Noemi Jimenez and Sweden's Emelie Lundstrom 3/2 to reach the last 16.

The twins needed to win their morning games to meet each other in the quarter finals, but it wasn't to be. Leona lost to Germany's Antonia Scherer on the last green while Lisa won her game by 3/2 over another Swedish girl, Camilla Hedberg. In the afternoon she got revenge for Leona when she beat Antonia Scherer by 3/1 to reach the semi-finals.

Lisa came up against great golf from French Ladies' Champion Alexandre Bonetti in the semi's and was knocked out on the 16th green. Bonetti went on to a very easy win in the final against Laura Sedda by 7/6 in a one sided contest. Sedda had earlier beaten Julie Yang the leading qualifier.

(9) DOUBLE WIN FOR MICHAEL COLLINS AT ADARE MANOR.

Cork man, Michael Collins plays most of his golf on the Europro Tour but took time out to play the beautiful Adare Manor in an Irish PGA Pro-Am. It was worth his while as he walked away with the winning Professional prize and the top team prize for the Pro-Am.

There was a shot-gun start, as play was held back because of fog. Collins started on the 11th and had made 3 birdies by the time he reached the 18th. He followed up with 3 more but unfortunately took a double bogey at the 8th for a four under par round of 65. Collins made it a double win when he brought home the winning team score of 99 points playing with three local amateurs.

(7)KAYMER CROWNED USPGA CHAMPION.

25 year old German, Martin Kaymer was crowned the USPGA Champion at Whistling Straits after a three hole play off against left hander Bubba Watson and with the first prize of $1,350,000 has now moved into 5th position in the World Rankings. He also leads the Race To Dubai table with €2,254,400.

It was one of the most exciting Majors of recent time and with our own Rory McIlroy in the shake up until the very end, it was complusive viewing until 2am on the Monday morning.

Overnight leader, Nick Watney, quickly ruled himself out of the picture when he started with a double bogey. It was one of those days for Watney as he finished up with an 81 and into a share of 18th on 4 under par.

The lead changed hands between Dustin Johnston, Martin Kaymer, Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy. McIlroy joined the leaders at the 14th with a birdie to go to 11 under par. Unfortunately he gave the shot back at the next and with Kaymer in the clubhouse on -11, Rory needed a 15 foot birdie putt at the 18th to join him. He made a great effort but it slid by the corner of the cup, and left him in a share of 3rd alongside Zach Johnston on 10 under par.

Left hander, Bubba Watson joined Kaymer in the clubhouse on 11 under after a 68 and they had to wait for the new leader, Dustin Johnston, to finish in the final group. Johnston needed only a par to win. He took a 5 but more drama was to unfold, as Johnston played his second shot from waste sand and 'grounded' his club. This unfortunate ruling cost him a 2 shot penalty and knocked him out of the play off.

The 3 hole play-off took place on the 10th,17th and 18th. Bubba got the upper hand with a birdie after chipping to 2 feet at the 10th. Kaymer hit back with a 15 foot putt for a birdie at the 17th. Level playing the 18th, Watson hit water with his 2nd shot leaving the way clear for Kaymer to claim his first Major title with a bogey 5.

It was also a great tournament for 21 year old McIlroy. He was 3 over par after the first 4 holes of the first round and fought back with 6 birdies for a 71. He then hit 68/69 and a closing 72 to finish only one shot away from a play off. His 3rd place finish earned him $331,527.

Darren Clarke was steady hitting rounds of 74,70,72 and 73 to finish in 48th place on 1 over par and collect $12,934.

It was not a good tournament for Padraig Harrington. He opened with a 75 but fought back bravely making 4 birdies in the first 6 holes of his second round. Despite being level par playing the 18th he found water with his second shot and took a double bogey to miss the cut on 2 over par.

US Open Champion Graeme Mc Dowell left himself too much to do after an opening 76. He played a lot better with a second round of 71 but missed the cut by 2 shots.

Shane Lowry opened with a 71 but fell away in round two with a 79 to miss the cut by 5 shots.

(5)TULLO SURPRISES MANASSERO IN SWITZERLAND.

32 year old Chile’s Mark Tullo carded a stunning seven under par 65 in the final round of the Rolex Trophy to deny 17 year old Italian teenager Matteo Manassero his first professional victory.

Manassero was leading by one with three holes to play but he bogeyed the 16th and 17th to slip back to 21 under for the tournament. He had a long birdie putt at the last which would have forced a play-off with Tullo, but it slid past the hole and he had to settle for a two under par 70 at Golf Club de Genève in Switzerland.

Manassero led by three shots from Alex Kaleka heading into the final day following rounds of 66, 67 and 64, and while the Frenchman was unable to mount a strong enough challenge, finishing with a 69, Tullo, four strokes back at the start of the round, applied sufficient pressure with some wonderful putting.

Tullo bogeyed the first but bounced back with eight birdies – four on each nine – to better his previous three rounds of 69, 66 and 66. His progress gradually turned up the heat on Manassero, who stayed in front with five birdies between the fourth and 14th, but as the course came under heavy rain,it was the Chilean who edged ahead as his rival slipped up.

Tullo, won a €24,400 that has helped him to move into the all important top 20 on the order of merit table. He has jumped from 30th into 11th place which should get him into the European Tour next year.

The only Irishman in action was Colm Moriarty. He played very well to return scores of 68,73,72,68 -7 for a share of 23rd and a cheque for €2,470.

(4)BRITISH BOYS' TITLE GOES TO SPAIN.

225 boys from all over Europe took part in the British Boys Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock( Barassie )Golf Club in Scotland. The winner was Spanish boy Adrian Otaegui who defeated German Max Rottluff on the 15th green in the final.

Five Irish came through the 36 hole qualifing rounds to reach the matchplay. Jamie Richardson ( Royal Portrush ) was unlucky to meet the winner in the first round and lost out by 3/2.

Chris Selfridge( Moyola Park ) beat Oscar Sharpe( England ) by 6/4; Dermot McElroy( Ballymena ) beat Sebastian Van Der Hoff( Germany ) by 2/1; Alex Gleeson( Castle ) beat Oliver Baker( Cardiff ) on the final green and Jeff Hopkins( Skerries ) beat Frederik Hammer( Denmark )2/1.

In the last 32 Dermot McElroy came up against his Irish team mate Alex Gleeson and beat him 2/1. Jeff Hopkins beat Jamie Rutherford( Knebworth ) on the final green but unfortunately Chris Selfridge lost out to Scott Gibson( Southenness ) by 3/2.

Dermot McElroy beat Ewan Scott( St.Andrews ) on the last green to book a quarter final spot and he was joined by Jeff Hopkins who also had to go to the final green before seeing off David Blick( East Devon ).

In the quarter final Dermot McElroy bowed out with a final hole defeat to German lad Aaron Leitmannstetter. Jeff Hopkins kept the Irish flag flying when he reached the semi-final with a 2/1 victory over Stanislas Gautier( France ).

It was all over for Hopkins and Ireland when Germany's Max Rottluff finished off the semi-final game on the 17th to book a final place against Adrian Otaegui from Spain.
Otaegui got in front early in the final and won the British Boys' Championship on the 15th green.

(3)ENGLAND RETAIN THE HOME INTERNATIONALS.

England retained the Home Internationals at Ashburnham Golf Club in Wales when they won all three matches against Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

England got off to a great start with an 11-4 win over Ireland. Dara Lernihan and Pat Murray were Ireland's only foursomes winners leaving them 4-1 down going into the singles. England proceeded to win the first 5 singles, before wins from Kevin Phelan, Connor Doran and Luke Lennox made the score more respectable. (2)ZANE SCOTLAND WINS ABC SOLUTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP.

ZANE Scotland clinched a victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour after a last-hole double bogey 7 from leader James Busby handed him the title.

Scotland had already finished and Busby held a one-shot lead going into the par-five 18th but fired a double bogey seven as Scotland won by one shot.

It completed a remarkable three days at the ABC Solutions UK Championship at De Vere Wychwood Park in Crewe as the lead repeatedly changed hands before Scotland clinched the £10,000 first prize.

This was Scotland's first Europro event since 2007 as he plays mostly on the Challenge Tour and qualified for the Open Championship at St.Andrews.Going into the back nine Zane was only one under par and well behind the leaders. He showed his ability with a 4 under back nine for a best of the day 68 to set the clubhouse target of 5 under par.

Busby was in pole position when he stood on the par 5,18th with a one shot advantage. It turned into a nightmare for him as first he drove into the water on the right. After a penalty drop he proceded to hook his 3rd shot into an unplayable lie.He then made the green with his 5th shot and took two putts for a 7 to lose the title by one shot to Scotland.

It was an expensive hole for Busby as he had to settle for the runner up prize of £5,000.With a win Busby would have moved into 2nd on the order of merit and a guaranteed Challenge Tour card for next year but as things sit he is in 7th place and one place away from an automatic promotion next year.

14 Irish made the journey to Crewe for the Championship but only 5 made the 36 hole cut mark of 2 over par.

Noel Fox started on the 10th in the first round and was packing his bags after it took him 42 shots(+6)to cover the back nine.He recovered with a front nine of 32(-4)for a round of 74.A second round of level par 72 got him into the final round on the cut mark of +2.His 3rd round of 15 pars and 3 birdies for a 69,lifted him from 47th into a share of 15th on -1,215 and won him £455.

Brian McElhinney got himself into contention with opening rounds of 72 and 69 to sit on 3 under par.He was only one shot behind the winning score with 5 holes to go,but made 3 bogies to drop down to 15th alongside Noel Fox after a closing 74.

Recent winner of the Ulster PGA Championship,Barrie Trainor finished in 22nd place with rounds of 71,72 and 74 for a +1 total of 217 and won £365.Trainor got a bad start to his final round with 3 bogies in the first 4 holes.

Michael Mc Geady and Brendan Mc Carroll tied in 47th place on +6 222 for a prize of £210.Mc Geady closed with a 78 while Mc Carroll had a 76.
