49 year old David Frost set the early pace in the Celtic Manor Wales Open played over the Twenty ten Ryder cup course. Frost hit a sparkling 5 under par 66 and was later joined by Thomas Bjorn,Nick Dougherty and Alan McClean.
Past champion Paul McGinley had a strange day.He had an eagle at the 18th,a triple bogey and a mix of pars and birdies that all added up to a 3 under par 68.
Peter Lawrie is in good shape with a -2 69.
Johnny Caldwell and Gary Murphy both had +1,72s,Michael Hoey was one worse on 73,Damien McGrane wasn't at the races on 75 and Shane Lowry returned a poor 77.
With both Ryder cup captains in action,Europe took an early advantage when Monty returned a 69 and Pavin had a 72.
