Ernie Els held off the challenge of Retief Goosen to capture the South African Open Championship for the 5th time in his career on a fascinating final day in Durban.
In the 100th staging of the event, it was fitting that Els, who shot a final round six under par, edged out fellow former champion Goosen by a shot, as arguably the two greatest South African golfers of the modern era went head to head.
Els hit rounds of 65,65,64 and a closing 63 ( -25 ) to pip good friend Retief Goosen by only one shot.
Damien McGrane had a steady week finishing on 7 under par after scores of 71,70,64 and 70. He claimed a share of 33rd place and a cheque for €7,600.
Northern Irelands Michael Hoey got a poor start with a 75. He improved with a 2nd round of 70 but missed the -3 cut mark by 4 shots.
