Jimenez pips Westwood in Play off to win Dubai Classic !

Miguel Angel Jiménez beat Lee Westwood at the third play-off hole to win the Omega Dubai Desert Classic following a thrilling see-saw final day at Emirates Golf Club.

European Number One Westwood birdied the last hole in regulation to card a final round level par 72 to join Jiménez at 11 under par.

Spaniard Jiménez, who began the day holding a one shot lead alongside Westwood, Alvaro Quiros and Thongchai Jaidee, missed a ten foot birdie chance at the 72nd hole to card his own final round of 72.

Westwood missed championship-winning putts at the first two extra holes, while on both occasions Jiménez had to fight to stay in contention - with a 12 foot par putt the second time around keeping his title hopes alive.

After switching to the par four ninth after two trips up the 18th, Jiménez holed out from four feet to claim his 19th professional title and first since the 2008 BMW PGA Championship, after Westwood had missed his six foot par putt.

Defending champion 20 year old Rory McIlroy had a frustrating day.Starting the last round 2 shots behind the leaders,he missed a lot of birdie chances before making bogies at the 7th & 9th to turn on 2 over par.Birdies at the 10th & 13th got him back in contention but late bogies at the 15th & 17th left him well behind.A final hole birdie gave him a round of 73 and a share of 6th place with Alvero Quires on 8 under par and 3 shots behind the winner.

Gareth Maybin 72 and Graeme McDowell 75 finished in a share of 20th on 3 under par.Darren Clarke 73 was 27th on -2,while Damien McGrane was glad to win a cheque after 2 missed cuts in a row.He shot a final round 72 for a share of 44th place on +1 and won a cheque for 9,428 Euros.

Michael Hoey and Peter Lawrie missed the cut by 1 shot when they were both +2 for 36 holes.Shane Lowry was out of sorts to miss the cut by 3 shots on +5.
