He took the jokes in good faith and in the first of the FedEx play off's,The Barclays he is in a good position after hitting a bogey free 4 under par 67.It only took Padraig 25 putts, never found water, and is only 2 shots behind the leaders.

There was no good news for the 12 Irish playing. It will be another day struggling to make the cut.
Former winner,Brian McElhinney was 5 under par after 9 holes but fell away over the back nine with 2 double bogies to finish on level par 72.Tim Rice needed to hole his second shot at the par 4,10th to also finish on par.Brendan McCarroll had a one over par 73,while Daniel Sugrue,Richard Kilpatrick and Michael McDermott can't afford to make any mistakes today as they are on the cut mark of +2 74.

Y E YANG WINS PGA CHAMPIONSHIP.

Yong-eun Yang became the first Asian born golfer to lift a major golf title when he won the PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at HAZELTINE in MINNESOTA by beating the Worlds No1 golfer,Tiger Woods by 3 shots after they went head to head in the final round.

Starting the day 2 shots back from Woods,Yang took advantage of a poor day by Woods to shoot a 2 under par 70 and a -8 total of 280,while Woods made more records by losing his first Major when leading,in fact it was the first time he lost in America when holding a 54 hole lead.

The break through came when Yang chipped in for an eagle 2 at the 14th and Woods holed his only putt of the day for birdie to stay only one behind.Everybody including Yang were expecting something special from Woods but it never happened. In fact it was Yang who produced the"special shot" at the 18th from behind a tree.He hit a hybird No3 iron into 15 feet and holed for a birdie to give him a 3 shot victory as Tiger flew the green and took a bogey 5 for a round of 75.

37 year old Yang started the year in 478th in the World. He won the Honda Classic and moved to 110th in the World before the PGA and now he can relax as his win gives him a 5 year exemption,a cheque for $1.35 million and a jump into No34 in the World.

It was a great tournament for the Irish.Defending champion Padraig Harrington was only one shot behind Yang and Woods when he took an 8 at the 8th after visiting the water twice. He held on bravely to finish on Par 288 and joined Graeme McDowell in a share of 10th.

It was 20 year old Rory McIlroy who stole the show.He started the day with a double bogey, but recovered with birdies at the 3rd,4th,5th,9th and 14th with one other bogey at the 12th to share 3rd place with Lee Westwood after both returned -2 rounds of 70 for a total of -3,285.
It has been a great year for Rory as in his first full year playing all 4 Majors,he finished 20th in the Masters,46th in the Open championship,10th in the US Open and now 3rd in the PGA.
He is now 22nd in the World and 3rd in the Race to Dubai with 1,678,227 Euros.

TIGER QUIETLY STAYS ON COURSE FOR MAJOR NO15.

Tiger Woods had a very quiet day on the HAZELTINE NATIONAL golf course yesterday to shoot a one under par 71 and hold a 2 shot advantage going into the final round of the 91ST PGA CHAMPIONSHIP on 8 under par.
He started the day with a 4 shot lead and after a two birdie, one bogey round of 71 his lead is down to 2.He is being chased by defending champion,Padraig Harrington(69) and Honda Classic winner Y.E Yang(67)on -6.
There is another 2 shot gap to US Open winner Lucas Glover and Henrik Stenson who had a solid round of 68 to sit on -4.

I believe that Tiger has had his bad day over him and he will come out today with "all guns blazing".He has never lost a Major with a lead going into the final round and even though,i am delighted to see Harrington back to his brilliant best,i don't feel he has enough in his bag to beat Tiger by 3 shots today.Yang has never been in this position in a major before and he will be playing with Tiger.

20 year old Rory McIlroy is in joint 13th place on one under par.He has shown that he is Major class as he has run up 12 birdies this week, the same as Tiger, but it is the 9 bogies and a careless double bogey at the par 3,17th in the second round that has stopped him from chasing the title.
Graeme McDowell is one shot back from McIlroy on par after a bogey at the 18th for a 71,leaves him in joint 18th heading into the final round.

CAN TIGER BE CAUGHT AT HAZELTINE ?

World No1 Tiger Woods looks to be on target to collect his 15th Major title as he is already 4 shots clear of the field at the half way stage of the US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP at HAZELTINE.
He led after a 67 -5 in round one and on a windy and tricky scoring day he birdied the 14th,15th and 16th for a second round of 70-2 to lead on -7 and open up a 4 shot gap to a bunch of 4 players on -4.
They include defending champion,Padraig Harrington 73,US Open winner Lucas Glover 70,Englands Ross Fisher 68,Vijay Singh 72 and Aussie Brandon Jones 70.

Things are not looking good for the chasing pack,as Tiger has never been beaten in his last 8 tournaments when he was leading at the half way stage.

Harrington has been playing great golf the last two weeks and he should be the biggest threat to Tiger over the weekend.Despite dropping 3 shots in a row he still managed to keep in touch with a second round 73 to go with his opening 68.
Rory McIlroy got a poor start but he showed his class by making 5 birdies on his way to a 36 hole total of 144 level par.
Graeme McDowell got 2 early biries to join Tiger on -4 but fell back to +1 145 after he made 6 bogies and only one futher birdie.
Darren Clarke played good golf last week at The Bridgestone challenge and gained an invitation to the PGA this week.He couldn't handle the conditions and failed to make the +4 cut after rounds of 78/76 +10.

TIGER WINS ! HARRINGTON IS BACK !

Is there no stopping Tiger Woods? The man is a genius. After a slow start in the BRIDGESTONE INVITATIONAL at FIRESTONE COUNTRY CLUB in AKRON,OHIO Woods produced two rounds of 65 to win his 7th BRIDGESTONE title after a great tussle with Padraig Harrington.
Starting 3 behind Harrington,Woods got a fast start with a 20 foot eagle putt at the 2nd,followed by birdies at the 4th & 5th to take a one shot lead.A further birdie at the 9th left him to the turn in 30 shots and a 2 shot lead, from Harrington who made 9 pars in a row.
Harrington who has had a terrible year while he made some swing changes, proved he is back with his first birdie at the 11th to close the gap to one.He went back in front after Tiger dropped shots at the 13th & 14th.
The bubble burst for Harrington at the 16th.After watching Tiger hit an 8 iron to a foot for a definite birdie,Padraig third flew through the green. The large crowd went quiet as his 4th shot from a downhill lie flew out quickly and into the water. An 80 yard shot back finished through the green and a chip and putt gave him an 8 and allowed Tiger to take a 3 shot lead with 2 to go.
Tiger proved his golfing skills with another terrific iron shot to the 18th for a closing birdie and a 4 shot win over Harrington(72) and Robert Allenby(66)
It was a great week for Harrington as he tee's up with Tiger once again next week when he will defend his US PGA title at Hazeltine.
For Tiger,he just keeps setting new records week after week.He collected 999,407 Euros to sit on top of the US Tour rankings after 5 wins this year.He collected 550 points to extend his lead in the FedEx cup to an uncatchable 946 points.
He has now won at Firestone in this event 7 times from 10 starts and has never been out of the top 5.16 victories in the World golf Championship series, winning at least one every year since they started in 1999.
His 70th tour win is only 3 behind Jack Nicklaus and 12 behind the overall leader Sam Snead.

Darren Clarke birdied the 18th to return a 69 that finished off a good week in 22nd spot on level par.
Graeme McDowell hit a closing round of 70 to finish on +5 and 45th place.
Rory McIlroy never got to grips with the course and closed with a 74 in 68th place on +10.
Shane Lowry's first World event finished better than it started. He had a pair of 78s in the first two rounds, but came good at the weekend with a pair of 72s to finish in 77th place on +20.He picked up the biggest cheque since turning Professional of 25,699 Euros and gained a lot of experience.

COLSAERTS WINS IN FINLAND IN PLAY OFF.

Belgium,Nicolas Colsaerts won his first event on the Challenge tour when he won the SK GOLF CHALLENGE in FINLAND.
COLSAERTS won the hard way.he finished with 2 birdies for a final round 66 and a -11 total,to join Wales guy Rhys Davies as clubhouse leaders.France's,Julien Guerrier only needed a par to take the title, instead he made a bogey and had to join Colsaerts and Davies in a play off.
The play off lasted two holes before Nicolas Colsaerts was presented with the trophy and a cheque for 28,000 Euros that has lifted him into 7th place on the order of merit and now in with a great chance of a full European card next year.
Guerrier and Davis picked up 15,750 Euros and are both in the top 20.
4th place went to first round leader,Jose-filipe lima on 10 under par.
Local favorite,Roope kakko had a bad day and finished down in 8th place after a closing 73 that left him -8 for the tourament.

Irelands,Colm Moriarty had another dissapointing finish. He finished down in a share of 47th on a +1 total after a level par round of 72.
His cheque for 805 Euros didn.t help his order of merit position. He is the top Irish man in 51st position.

CAN HARRINGTON HOLD THE TIGER BACK ?

Padraig Harrington returned a 67 in the 3rd round of the BRIDGESTONE INVITATIONAL event to reach 10 under par. While he was enjoying the applause from the crowd,he took his first look at the leaderboard and got a shock to see the name of Tiger Woods on 7 under par.
"I didn't know he was up there"said Padraig to his caddy. It was a shock for Padraig as he had birdied 4 of the last 6 holes and thought he had pulled well away from the pack, but Woods already a winner of the BRIDGESTONE 6 times made 4 birdies of his own over the last 6 holes, returning a 65 to close the gap to 3.
Harrington showed the world his golfing skills, especially over the front nine.He played hooked, low shots under trees, cut shots under trees, fantastic chips and putts for pars and then on the back nine when he started to find the fairways he only needed 11 putts from 30 feet in to return a 67 and leave himself with a 3 shot cushion for the final round.
Tiger on the other hand was hitting some fantastic iron shots, leaving himself short birdie putts which he didn't miss.
It is going to be a fantastic day for golf fans as they watch two of the best shot makers and short game experts do battle, over the FIRESTONE course.
CAN HARRINGTON HOLD ON ?
Padraig & Tiger have to be careful that they don't forget about the rest of the world class field.Jerry Kelly is only 2 shots behind Tiger on -5 and on -4 is a group of 10 players that includes Masters champion,Angel Cabrera,Lucas Glover,US OPEN Champ and recent OPEN CHAMPION,Stewart Cink.

The next best Irishman to Padraig is Darren Clarke. He has played steady golf all week with rounds of 71,70,70 for a share of 34th on +1.Graeme McDowell had a 71 for a share of 59th on +5.Rory McIlroy never made a birdie in a round of 71 to sit in 61st place on +6 and Shane Lowry had an unfortunate double bogey at the 15th for a 72.
His +18 total is 78th.

Saturday 8 August 2009

Moriarty falls back in Finland after 3rd round.

Denmarks,Jacob Olesen jumped out of the pack in the SK GOLF CHALLENGE at LINNA GOLF CLUB in FINLAND with a sparkling round of 6 under par, 66 that lifted him to the top of the leaderboard on 10 under par going into the final round, alongside Frances Julien Guerrier who had a 67.
Local Roope Kakko gave the home fans something to chear about when he returned a 67 to move into 3rd on -9.
Overnight leader Jose-Filipe Lima could only manage a level par 72 and is now in a share of 8th on -6,4 behind.
last weeks winner,Jamie Mc Leary had a bad day with a 74 and is well back on -3.

Colm Moriarty, the only remaining Irish man was on 19th overnight and in need of a good finish to move up the rankings, but faded badly with a 75 and is now down in 50th place on +1.

Harrington still in Charge at Bridgestone.

padraig Harrington was in good form as he held on to the lead after two rounds of the BRIDGESTONE INTERNATIONAL at FIRESTONE COUNTRY CLUB in OHIO.
After his best score this year in the opening round of 64,he was a bit more conservative during his second round. He only made 2 birdies and one bogey for a 69 and with a -7 total he is one shot clear from Tim Clarke 66/68-6.
They are looking over their shoulder at World No1 Tiger Woods who is in 13th place after rounds of 68/70 -2 and waiting for him to pounce.

Darren Clarke is the next best of the Irish. He needed two late birdies at the 16th and 17th to leave him in 36th place after rounds of 71,70.Graeme McDowell is in 58th position with scores of 73/71.Rory McIlroy who made 7 bogies the first day of 75,only made one bogey in his level par round of 70 and remains on +5 and in 63rd place.
Irish Open winner,Shane Lowry has found the going difficult and is 78th out of 79 players on +16 after matching rounds of 78.

Moriarty makes a move in Finland.

Colm Moriarty has been playing better golf this past few weeks on the Challenge tour, and in Finland this week he is only 4 shots behind the leader at the half way stage of the SK GOLF CHALLENGE.
To reach the top 20,Colm needs a few good finishes as he is currently lying 51st in the table, some 15,000 behind the 20th man.
Jose-Filipe Lima is the leader of the tournament on 6 under par after a 70/68.Last weeks winner Jamie Mcleary is in a group of 3 on 139-5.
Moriarty shot 73/69 for a tie of 19th on -2 and as the only Irishman to make the cut he will be the best on the merit table as Simon Thornton took this week of to play in the Ulster Championship where he fininshed 6 shots behind the winner Barrie Trainor.
Michael McGeady's miserable season continues with rounds of 73/74 he missed the plus 2 cut by one shot.Daniel Sugrue was never at the races on 79/81+16 and Stephen Grant retired half way through his second round.

Friday 7 August 2009

World No1 Tiger Woods shot a closing round 69 to win his 69th tournament with a -20 total at Warwick Hills golf & country club.
