(30)SIMON THORNTON WINS AT CONCRA WOOD.

European Tour player, Simon Thornton from Newcastle took a week off tour and won the 6th and final one day Irish PGA Sprint tournament at the magnificent Concra Wood Golf Club in Castleblaney, Monaghan.

Playing in the last group, Thornton got the perfect start with birdies at the first three holes. He got to 5 under after 15 holes before he made his first mistake. A dropped shot at the 16th was followed up with a birdie at the 17th, only for Thornton to make another bogey at the last.

His 68 which is the new course record was good enough to beat the in form Michael Collins from Cork by one shot. After recent wins at Adare Manor and Greenore, Collins was looking good for the hat trick as he was clubhouse leader on 69 until Thornton came through in the final group to pip him by one shot.
