DANIELLE MC VEIGH WINS SPORTSWOMEN AWARD FOR JUNE.

Kilkeel's Danielle McVeigh has been named The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Month for June.Danielle,a 22-year-old,was the oldest member of the Curtis Cup team.She has had a memorable golfing year so far, winning the Scottish Stroke Play Championships in April to add to her British and Welsh titles from last year.

Although the United States team triumphed at the Curtis Cup last month, McVeigh enhanced her reputation with her performance for the Britain and Ireland team.

Danielle's father Thomas(53)and No1 fan,passed away less than a month before the Curtis Cup game after a short illness. Mary McKenna,captain of the Curtis Cup team,described McVeigh as a 'tower of strength',to her younger colleagues.

McVeigh finished the competition with two and a half points which included a comprehensive 3 and 2 win in the singles against the US Amateur champion Jennifer Song, who has since turned professional.

This is McVeigh's first time to win the Sportswoman of the Month award and she will battle it out with other monthly winners in January 2011 to be named Sportswoman of the Year.
