LANGER WINS BRITISH SENIORS AT CARNOUSTIE.

German,Bernhard Langer held off the challenge of US Ryder Cup Captain,Corey Pavin to win The Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Langer who started his last round 3 shots clear of Pavin had a closing round of 72 for a 5 under par total 279, one better than the US Ryder Cup Captain, who finished his first Senior Major with a round of 70.

Langer,joined the Seniors Tour almost three years ago.He has finished in the top 10 in 7 of his 12 Senior Majors, but incredibly this was his first Major since winning the second of his Green Jackets at Augusta National in 1993.

It was a 2 horse race during the last round with Pavin cutting the 3 shot advantage to 1 early in the round,but Langer showed all his experience to hang on the the lead until the 72nd hole.

Americans,Jay Don Blake,Russ Cochran,Fred Funk and Austrailian Peter Senior were joint 3rd on 1 under par 283.

Des Smyth was the best of the Irish,finishing in 26th place on 7 over par after rounds of 74,74,72,71 291.

The only other Irishman to make the cut was Denis O Sullivan.He finished down in 58th place on 14 over par 298.
