Stewart Cink wins his first Major in play off at Turnberry.

36 year old American Stewart Cink was not the peoples favorite as he headed into a 4 hole play off with 59 year old Tom Watson in the 138th Open Championship at Turnberry yesterday.
As the lead changed hands all day,Cink was very much under the radar.Ross Fisher started birdie, birdie to go to -5 only to find himself at +2 on the 7th after a terrible run over the 5 holes.Westwood crept up and at one stage led by 2.21 year old Chris Wood had a run of eagle, birdie, par birdie to join the leaders and went on to set the clubhouse lead on 279 -1.Cink made 2s at the 11th &15th and a 15 foot putt for birdie at the 18th left him the new clubhouse leader on 278 -2.Westwood -2 playing the last, played a magnificent bunker shot onto the green.Feeling that he needed a birdie as Watson had gone to -3 at the 17th,he raced his putt and missed the return for a 279 -1 to join Wood.
The rest is now history as Watson took a 5 and lost to Cink in the 4 hole play off.
"This is a surreal experience" said Cink as he collected the claret jug"I grew up admiring Tom Watson and to be a part of this is very special for me.

It wasn't a great championship for the Irish.7 took part,5 made the cut and the best finish was by Graeme McDowell with a final round 73 for a tie of 34th place on +5.
Paul McGinley slipped up in the last round with a 75 to finish joint 43rd on +7.
Rory McIlroy was expected to compete, but didn't deliver. He had a solid 71 in the last round for a tie of 47th on +8,Darren Clarke recovered with a closing 69 and joint 52nd on +9 and the defending champion Padraig Harrington is still on the road to re discover a swing he should never have lost.He closed with a 73 and joint 65th place on +12.
